This week, Facebook announced its new video platform, Watch, was being launched to a small percentage of US users. The platform features some original content funded by Facebook and will also feature personalised recommendations. Access to Watch will be rolled out to the rest of the US first before expanding internationally.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “Watching a show doesn’t have to be passive. It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things… You’ll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build [a] community.”

HATE SPEECH TWEETS APPEAR OUTSIDE TWITTER HQ
Tweets have been stencilled outside Twitter’s Hamburg office by a protester called Shahak Shapira.
Mr Shapira claims to have reported 300 incidents of hate speech to Twitter in a six-month period, but claims Twitter has only responded to nine of them.
The tweets include homophobic and racists comments. During the same six-month time frame, 150 hate speech comments were reported to Facebook by Mr Shapira, of which 80% were removed within 3 days. Mr Shapira said: “If Twitter forces me to see these things, then they should have to see it as well.”
EMOJIS HELP COMPUTERS UNDERSTAND EMOTION
Scientists have been using emojis to help train computers to understand human emotion through text. They have developed an algorithm called DeepMoji using millions of Tweets containing emojis. The algorithm has learned how to understand emotion and sarcasm as the emojis give emotional context to the words. Watch the video below to learn more.
The algorithm could prove very useful for detecting the meaning of social media posts and helping to detect hate speech. Brands may also find it useful to determine the sentiment towards their brand and products.
YOUTUBE’S NEW MESSAGING FEATURE
YouTube announced this week it has added a new mobile-only feature to allow users to chat and share videos with their friends within the app.
To use the feature, users press the share button, and they have the option to share the video with any of their contacts and engage in group conversations with up to 30 participants. The feature was previously just available in Canada but it is now being rolled out globally.
