GOOGLE HIT BY RECORD FINE

Google made headlines this week after they were hit with a €2.4bn fine by the European Commission. The fine is the largest one to ever be issued by the regulator after Google was accused of distorting the market and abusing its monopoly position with its own Shopping service, which appears at the top of search results in its search engine. They have now been ordered to make alterations to their Shopping service, but the commission hasn’t specified exactly what these changes should be. Google is now deciding whether to appeal the case.

SOCIAL MEDIA WORKS ITS MAGIC

This week marked the 20 year anniversary since the release of the first Harry Potter book by J. K. Rowling, which made everyone feel very old! Both Facebook and Twitter came up with creative ways to mark the occasion on their channels. Facebook created an animation of a spell, which appeared when users posted the words Harry Potter, Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. The names of the houses were also coloured according to the house colours. Twitter, on the other hand, created a #HarryPotter20 hashtag, and also introduced a thunderbolt and specs emoji to mark the occasion.

INTERNET COMPANIES TEAM UP TO TACKLE EXTREMIST CONTENT

Over the last few weeks, the likes of Facebook and YouTube have announced several measures to tackle terrorist related content on their platforms. This week, they have both teamed up with Twitter and Microsoft to form a new group with the aim of making all their platforms ‘hostile’ to extremist content. The group will share technical solutions, jointly fund new research and will create a joint database for recognising imagery and video through machine learning. Internet companies have been undergoing criticism in recent months for the way they are dealing with extremist content, and it is hoped the new group approach will help to tackle the issue.

WIMBLEDON TO STREAM CONTENT VIA TWITTER

For Wimbledon this year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club has partnered with Twitter to stream live content. Tennis fans will be treated to behind-the-scenes content, interviews and real-time commentary around the matches. Anthony Nato, Twitter’s chief operating officer, said: “The All England Club continues to transform the experience for fans on Twitter, a place where tennis conversation is happening live in real time every day. Our collaboration with the All England Club will provide fans on Twitter access to coverage from around the grounds from Wimbledon 2017, while following the conversation all on one screen.” They have also created an emoji for the tennis tournament, which will appear when users post the hashtag #Wimbledon.

AND FINALLY…

Online travel company, Kayak, has come up with a new way to search for destinations on its website. The company has released ten searchable emojis, which each link to a different destination. The aim is to make Kayak a more mobile-forward platform. The first ten include the Statue of Liberty for New York, a slot machine for Las Vegas and sushi for Japan. For the next 15 emojis, Kayak is asking the public to decide which cities they should represent.
